Reiki program at New York City's
St. Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center (SVCCC)

In April 2005, with a generous start-up grant from The Lloyd Symington Foundation, I*ACT partnered with St. Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center to inaugurate a program to provide Reiki treatment to patients, family/caregivers, and staff. As of May, 2007, I*ACT has given over 350 Reiki treatments at SVCCC. Out-patients receive Reiki treatment on a table or in a reclining chair while receiving chemotherapy. Ninety-seven per cent of the patients who report pain and/or anxiety experience improvement in their symptoms after receiving Reiki treatment.


Here are some of the patients' comments:
• I am a skeptic but I feel some inner energy movement, it is beneficial. • I feel relaxed, which is a nice change for a Type-A! • Thank you. I feel peaceful, it made me peaceful. • I was hysterical this morning. I feel much better. • It is like the sun, I can feel the warmth. • My cramps went away after 2 minutes. • I feel like I can breathe better, just great. • I realize that I haven't been touched in a long time. The stomach pain went away for a bit during Reiki. • First time in 2 weeks I haven't had stomach pain and felt nausea. • I feel my energy settle, soothing. • Pain still there but more relaxed. • I hardly ever relax like that. • I'm glad I had this opportunity, thank you. It is relaxing. • I feel that something opened up. • That was amazing. I don’t feel any pain now. It is completely gone. • I feel better balanced, more centered after Reiki. During the session [there was] noticeable dissolving of tension and pain. • It helped a lot to calm me and helped with the pain in my shoulder. Thank you. • I felt vibration moving in from your hands. It was relaxing and helped the pain. • I was a little tense before and am very relaxed after. It helped the pain in my back. • Anxiety significantly reduced, also helped with low back pain. • Digestion and stomach were very upset before treatment, tense- after treatment the tension and pain had vanished. • Thank you, that was amazing, and my shoulder, my shoulders are like new! • My body feels relaxed, peaceful, not so excited. Annual Spa Day for Women with Breast or Ovarian Cancer at
Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Manhattan

On Sunday, May 21, 2006 and Sunday, June 10, 2007, the JCC in Manhattan held Spa Days to offer healing services free of charge to 120 women each year with breast or ovarian cancer. For each event, I*ACT organized 45 Reiki practitioner volunteers to offer Reiki treatments to the attendees and staff members.

New York City American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) Meetings

I*ACT sponsors the New York City area AHMA meetings to educate health care professionals and students about complementary therapies and foster the dialogue between medical and non-medical health care providers. Professionals in the community have presented on a wide range of topics, including nutrition, homeopathy, acupuncture, Reiki, herbalism, integrative psychiatry and integrative approaches to sinusitis.
